A guide to Faire

Selling to shops on Faire, step by step.

Faire is a wholesale marketplace where independent shops find and order from brands like yours. This guide walks through every step, from deciding whether it suits you to your first orders, with the choices that are yours to make and the arithmetic laid out.

Faire’s own Help Center is thorough on where each button lives, so we link to it for those and keep our words for the decisions.

Would you rather hand it to us? Send us your photographs and prices, and we will prepare your shop and load it into Faire for you.

Faire’s rules and fees change from time to time. Every fact here shows the date we checked it on Faire’s own pages.

01

Is Faire right for you?

Faire suits a brand with products a shop can sell on and the stock to ship them on time. It puts your range in front of shops you may not have met yet. It also handles payment, and offers eligible shops time to pay while you are paid on the schedule you choose.

In return, Faire takes a commission and a payment fee on every order, and asks a few things of every brand.

What Faire asks of every brand

  • Your whole wholesale range on Faire, unless Faire agrees otherwise in writing.
  • Prices on Faire the same as, or lower than, anywhere else you sell, including your own wholesale page.
  • Product liability insurance in a reasonable amount for a business your size.
  • Every order accepted or cancelled within two business days.

What it costs

A shop’s first order with you
15% plus a $10 new customer fee
Every order after that

A shop you brought yourself through your own link

Payment fee, paid in 60 days
1.9% plus $0.30
Payment fee, paid in 30 days
2.4% plus $0.30
Payment fee, paid the next day
3.5% plus $0.30

The $10 fee and the $0.30 are charged once per order, not on each product. Payment days count from when the order ships.

Questions worth answering first

  • Would a shop owner meeting your collection for the first time understand it at a glance?
  • Is a first order at your minimum enough to make a small display in their shop?
  • Do your descriptions say the size, the use, the packaging and what arrives?
  • Could you fill a larger order without everything else in your week falling behind?
  • Does the margin still work once you count your own time?

Faire notes that shops typically need about half the retail price as their margin, so a retail price around twice your wholesale price.

Your decision

Fill in the fit check in the workbook with your own products and a sample order. If the numbers work, Faire is worth a try. If they do not, look at the whole picture: what each product costs to make and pack, the size of an order, shipping, the mix of products, and whether wholesale suits this part of your business right now. A Wholesale Brand Review is a good place to begin.

02

Have this ready before you apply

Applying takes a few minutes. Opening your shop goes faster when these are already to hand.

  • An email address that is not already on Faire, even as a shop account.
  • Your business details, a bank account for payouts, and your tax details.
  • Product liability insurance.
  • Every product with its name, description, wholesale price, retail price and case pack.
  • At least one good photograph of every product, two or more if you have them.
  • Your minimums, your shipping time, and how you will ship.

03

Apply

Sign out of any Faire shop account first, then start from Faire’s “Sign up to sell” page. Every field is required except how you heard about Faire.

Faire reviews applications in the order they arrive and looks at the balance of brands in your category, where you are, what you make, how many products you have, and the business you already run: whether you sell wholesale today, how established you are, and your social media. Approval is Faire’s decision. Naming the shops that already carry you, and a website that shows your full range, helps Faire see the business you already run.

04

Your shop page

Your shop page is the first thing a shop owner sees. Write it for them rather than for a shopper: who makes the products, where, and why they sell well in a shop like theirs.

  • Your brand name exactly as it appears on your products.
  • A short story: who you are, what you make, where.
  • A header picture that looks like your website, so a shop recognises you.
  • Only the values that are true of you.

Faire can adjust what you submit to fit its own standards and has the final say on how the page looks.

05

Your products

Shops find products mostly by searching, so each listing should say plainly what the product is.

Faire’s own advice

  • Names of 35 to 50 characters, in title case, with the details a shop would search for, such as colour, scent or style. Never the item number as the name.
  • A description with a short paragraph of 150 to 300 characters and 3 to 10 points: material, size, where it is made, care, ingredients.
  • A product type for every product. Without one, a product does not appear in your shop or in search.
  • Where each product is made, set on the product.

Only claims that are true and that you can stand behind. Faire holds each brand responsible for what its listings say.

Getting them onto Faire

New brands can import from Shopify, upload a spreadsheet (Faire’s template, or an export from Shopify, Etsy, WooCommerce, PrestaShop or Wix), or add products one at a time. Once your shop is open there is a bulk uploader, and for more than ten products Faire’s own team will load a file for you within about five business days.

06

Wholesale and retail prices

Faire asks for both prices on every product. They must be the same on Faire as everywhere else you sell in the same currency, or lower: your website, your line sheet, your own wholesale page. Faire asks brands to take part in a pricing review from time to time, so it is worth getting right before you open.

This also means Faire’s commission comes out of your margin. It cannot be added to your prices on Faire, so check each product’s margin with the fees in before you decide.

Your prices are yours to set. The workbook lays out cost, wholesale and retail side by side, with what you keep after Faire’s commission and fee, so you can see each product’s margin before you decide.

07

Minimums and shipping time

A first-order minimum is the smallest first order a shop can place with you. A reorder minimum is usually lower, which makes it easy for a shop that already knows you to top up. Both are optional, and you can set different ones for different countries.

A minimum protects you from orders too small to be worth packing. Set too high, it can stop a shop from trying you. If one shop needs an exception, you can write them a custom order instead.

Your shipping time is shown to shops before they order. Choose one you can keep on a busy week; Faire adjusts it to match how fast you actually ship.

08

Photographs

  • Square, ideally 1050 by 1050 pixels.
  • The first picture on white or a light background, with the product alone.
  • Styled and lifestyle pictures after the first one.
  • At least two photographs per product where you can.
  • Every file named with its product name or item number, so Faire can match it.

If your pictures are not square, Faire’s uploader can crop them.

09

Shipping

You can ship with Faire’s labels at the rates Faire has arranged with carriers, or with your own account, in which case Faire reimburses your actual cost. You can also set a flat rate or a free shipping minimum for each region. Handling and packaging fees can be up to $15 an order.

Pack for the journey. If a shop reports something broken or missing, you resolve it with them, and Faire recommends insurance on what you send.

10

Faire Direct, your own link

Every brand on Faire has its own link, [brand].faire.com. When a shop places its first order with you through that link, you pay no commission on that shop’s orders.

A shop that is new to Faire and orders through your link within seven days of signing up also receives 50% off that first order, up to $150 for a US brand, and a year of free shipping with you. Faire pays for both.

Shops you already know

A shop that ordered from you in the past four years, or that you invited with your link, can also qualify. Faire decides which orders qualify, and may ask for proof: an invoice for a past order, or the dated email, message or mailed piece that carried your link.

  • Put your link in every email and message you send to a shop.
  • Email the shops on your list at least every three months, as Faire suggests. Emails sent from Faire’s own campaign tool count automatically.
  • Print your link or Faire QR code on line sheets, postcards and anything you hand out at a show.

11

Your first orders

  • Accept or cancel each order within two business days, with the date it will ship.
  • Add tracking for every box, and Faire tells the shop it is on its way.
  • Answer messages in Faire promptly.
  • Choose how fast you are paid: in 60 days, 30 days or the next day, each with its own fee.

Shops can return a first order with a brand for free. Faire carries that return, so it is not taken from your payout.

12

After the first month

Keep your range and stock current: add new products as you make them, and mark anything sold out. Faire looks at how complete and accurate your shop is, how quickly you accept and ship, how often orders arrive damaged, and how you answer shops.

If you need a break, pause your shop for up to twelve weeks at a time and finish the orders you have already accepted.

When it is time to add a season or refresh your listings, the same rule applies: send us what you have, and we will prepare it.
